What Does the Bible Say About It?

Have you ever wondered what the Bible says about a certain subject? Perhaps you have sought guidance or comfort but don’t know where to turn. Or maybe some issue in our world sends you searching the Scriptures. Has someone ever tried to convert you to their opinion by quoting chapter and verse? How do we view the Bible as a guide for daily life?

Come join Pastor Walter on Wednesday evening to explore these questions together! We will gather at 6:00 p.m. in the Fireside Room February 1. No experience necessary!

Wednesday Night Kids to Follow Jesus

What was it like to be in the company of Jesus? During the month of February, the kids will study some of the stories about Jesus.

What It Takes to Follow Jesus: Jesus asked a few people to become his followers. The kids will explore ways they can follow Jesus.

Rappelling Through the Roof: Jesus healed a lame man who was lowered through the roof of a house. Jesus has the power to heal our bodies and forgive our sins. How can we encourage one another to help our friends learn about Jesus?

Wonder Bread: Jesus miraculously fed more than 5,000 people with a boy’s lunch. It is important we know that Jesus feeds our hearts as well as our stomachs.

Silent Night, Stormy Night: A night on the lake finds Jesus calming the waters as his disciples shook with fear during a big storm. Jesus is both divine and human. The disciples are amazed and somewhat afraid of the power of Jesus. Through the presentation of skits the kids will dig deeper into these stories.

Please note: There will be no Wednesday Night activities on February 8 and 15.

Kids Present Christmas Musical with Fervor

On Sunday, December 18 at 11:00 a.m., the Emmaus kids presented their annual Christmas pageant. This year’s selection, "Census Time in Bethlehem," was a musical about the names of Jesus.

Imperial census taker B.A. Countable, played by Santi Espinoza, was challenged again and again by Mary (Jessica Martinez) and Joseph (Luis Faz) that they knew the baby about to be born was indeed a boy and that this special baby was the Son of God. The shepherds, played by Romi Espinoza, Lexi Cruz and Alicia Trapp, arrived at the manger and confirmed that Jesus had other names. It was an "aha" moment when B.A. Countable realized that this baby is Jesus the Christ.

The kids' chorus sang with great fervor a variety of songs that depicted what it must have been like in the town of Bethlehem when Jesus was born. "Jesus, Baby Boy" conveyed the same message to us today that this baby was and still is the hope of the world. "Emmanuel, God Is With Us" told how He's above us, below us, beside us all around. In the rousing finale, "Christmas Time in Bethlehem," the kids played several verses with kazoos. Thanks to all who helped with this production.

Teachers Needed for Sunday School

To continue offering regular Sunday School, we need the commitment of teachers. Contact Liliana Moncada or Pastor Mary for more details about how you might make Sunday School happen at Emmaus.

Congratulations, Class of 2011!

Congratulations to Emmaus high school and college graduates in 2011! We reached some of our graduating seniors, who shared their post-graduation plans:

  • Justin Haman graduated in June from MATC with a degree in Fire Science. He is a volunteer firefighter at Somers Fire Department and works full time at Medacare Ambulance in Milwaukee. He recently had an interview with the Brookfield Fire Department and is waiting for the results of that. He is still living in town with a couple of buddies, one including Brian Field.
  • Nathan Lamberton is graduating from University of Wisconsin Whitewater with a B.A. in Inter-personnel Communications. He plans to move back to Racine, where he continues to work at Rogan’s Shoes. He is seeking a position in the Sales or Advertising profession.
  • Ryan Lamberton is graduating from Horlick High School and plans to attend University of Wisconsin – Parkside in the fall.
  • Marcus Porcaro, son of Missy and Mark Porcaro, earned his Associate Degree in Accounting from Gateway Technical College this spring.

To these, and all the graduates we may have missed, congratulations, and best of luck with your plans for this summer and fall!

English Conversation Circles Expand

A number of Latino people who attend Emmaus are very eager to practice their English and are coming to church at 6:00 p.m. Wednesday nights to do just that. Emmaus members Kathy Christensen, Diane Melander and Dennis Eschmann have gotten the ball rolling and are giving their new Latino friends hints about how to express themselves in certain situations. The conversation groups now also meet on Sundays at 10:45.

Some of the possible scenarios include:

What would you say in each of the following situations?

  • You want to catch up on the latest news.
  • You are very grateful for a favor.
  • You are very happy to meet someone.
  • You stepped on someone’s foot.
  • You didn’t understand what someone said.
  • You want to know how things are going for your friend.
  • You expect to see someone later on.
  • Your English-speaking friend is talking too fast.
  • Someone knocks on your door.
  • You offer someone a seat.
  • You need to go through a crowded room.

Other situations might be:

  • You want to ask someone where he or she works.
  • You want to order something to drink.
  • You want to know the time.

What conversation might take place at a grocery store, a bank, a party, a doctor's office, a pharmacy, a post office, a school conference for a child?

Preschool VBS Had Whale of Good Time

by Nancy Smith

Wow! How big will it get? Do we get to go inside? Can we stand up? Can we have snack in there? All questions asked by our preschool Vacation Bible School kids who stood wide-eyed as they watched a life sized whale made out of plastic being inflated.

Can you imagine being in the belly of a whale? Yes, it would probably be smelly with all those sea creatures flopping around. The kids learned about the Creation story, Joseph and the Amazing Colored Robe, Jonah and the Whale, the Three Wise Men and Zacchaeus. A fun time was had by all. Thanks to RyAnn, Yesenia, Jen and Lydia for your help!
