Hispanic Congregation Invites You to International Festival at Emmaus

by Jhon Freddy Correa

The Latino community invites the entire family of Emmaus to participate in the first International Festival taking place on July 24 from 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and July 25 from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Goals: Benefits will go toward the school of music, continuing supporting for families to learn the five instruments that we have taught since January, 2010.

Also part of the proceeds will be for the program Mana del Cielo (Manna from Heaven) to keep feeding families who are going through struggles during this time. Another goal is do outreach to the entire community of Racine.

You can help! How? Volunteering, sponsoring, donating gifts and money, coming and bringing all your family and friends.

What will we have? Live music — more than six bands are confirmed so far — and food. Jose’s Blue Sombrero will be our host restaurant during the two days festival. We will have vendors and lots of games for children. Come and be part of a community that believes in a different future!

More information will be announced.

Sign Up for Grounds Care

by Cathy Meyer

Do you remember how beautiful the Emmaus grounds looked last summer? That was due to a diligent group of people who spent hours tending the shrubs and flowers surrounding the church. Individuals interested in adopting a plot this year for Emmaus grounds care may sign up in the narthex indicating an area of your choice.

This would also be a good time to check out the landscape plan and consider adopting a plant in honor or memory of someone so that we may continue to "green up" the Emmaus environment. Plants that were previously adopted in honor or memory of loved ones were planted last fall.

Latinos Lead Gardening Project

Thanks to the generosity of John and Tara Halberstadt, an ambitious gardening project is underway. The Halberstadts are providing a greenhouse for use to grow the seedlings which will be transplanted to the garden plots at St. Andrew Lutheran Church on Four Mile Road.

The Latino community of Emmaus has provided the seeds, dirt and labor for the project. The people of St. Andrew have already prepared space for the seedlings to be planted. Plans for the harvest include sharing it with the food bank and members of the congregations as well as to sell a portion in a farmers’ market setting.

Fireside Room Gets Facelift

As a part of the facelift and updating of the Fireside Room, Shirley Velzka and her family are donating new carpeting in memory of her son, Kerry Hunter. Kerry served as the custodian of Emmaus, and the new furniture in the Fireside Room has also been given in his memory.

A gift of Fireside Room furniture, in memory of Emmaus member and custodian Kerry Hunter, has also been made.

Should anyone like to make a donation toward new windows or window treatments for the room, gifts may be earmarked “Fireside Room.”
